View Full Version : Confused about all the Deki products

Is there a comparison page which shows the differences at glance between all the products you have available? I'm confused about what makes each of Standard and Enterprise distinct from each other (in particular, but the confusion applies to all).

For example deki Standard (http://wiki.mindtouch.com/Products/MindTouch_Deki_Standard)has the heading "Experience the Power of Enterprise Wiki Collaboration" and deki Enterprise (http://wiki.mindtouch.com/Products/MindTouch_Deki_Enterprise)says "Create a Collaborative Foundation for your Enterprise"

For another example, the Products page (http://wiki.mindtouch.com/Products) shows Standard, Enterprise, and Platform front and centre. Then there is Server and OnDemand off in the top right corner, and then repeated underneath in a visual arrangement which looks like Server might be specific to the Standard product while OnDemand to the Enterprise, but it's a little off-centre so maybe not. There is no mention at all of Community and Open Source Edition (which are the same thing, or are they?), which is how I learned about the commercial offerings in the first place.

These are just a couple examples of a disconnected message, or blurry distinction. The site redesign is very pretty and responsive, but it is like navigating a maze. I think a single page which has all the offerings in a chart or matrix format would go a long way to clearing things up. Harmonizing the words used across all the pages would help too, with one phrase refering to a one product rather than two or more for one.

I've been frequenting the wiki, forums, and main .com website for a month or so and if I'm still this confused there probably are a lot others who are also but can't be bothered, or don't have the time, to comment about it. Great product you folks are building, I like it, but some focus would help. :)

Have you read this thread?

Maybe it will help answer some of your questions.

Yes I have. It helped in understanding some of the differences between the open source and commercial offerings, but not between the commercials.

In technical terms:

MindTouch Deki Standard - an enterprise wiki. Pretty standard stuff.

MindTouch Deki Enterprise - Standard + access to our connectors (SQL server, SugarCRM, SalesForce, etc.). Basically, access to our mashup features (although you have the default ones in Standard).

MindTouch Deki Platform - for people who want to use custom connectors to connect their legacy data systems (that aren't already covered under Enterprise).

While I agree the wording could probably tightened up, it really isn't as simple as a product matrix - all three commercial offerings give you full access to Deki as a wiki ... the difference is in if you want to extend Deki to connect disparate systems.

Hope this clarifies.

Basically put, the further you move away from pure wiki functionality, the more useful the additional packages are.

Thanks Royk, that helps.

Does Standard include the Outlook and Word connectors?

The connectors are back on the download page for use in the open source versions: http://wiki.mindtouch.com/Download (I bring this up because somebody asked in another thread)

We are currently working on providing one package for the Desktop/Outlook/Word connectors - I believe it is the intent these will be made available for all commercial products of Deki. (I might be wrong about this, this is the last I heard)

The standard edition is quoted as $795 for '25 users'. Does that mean 25 contributors, or viewers, or logged in users?

As we will use Active Directory to control access, how would we keep the numbers down to 25 (of whatever they are) as we stabilise the platform before roll-out to other groups and sections of the organisation?

Cheers,
Tim.

25 r-e-g-i-s-t-e-red (can somebody tell me how to fix this in vbulletin?!) users inside Deki (deactivated users do not count towards the quota)

With LDAP synchronization, the user accounts aren't created until a user logs-in. So with the 25 user package, the first 24 (Admin counts towards the quota) users who log-in will have access.

Is that word in your swear word filter?

Looked at it many times and no, it's not in the list of banned words. Very maddening!

Hey there. You wrote:

... but I can't find an open source word connector. Has this been gobbled back up into commercial? Or was there never a work connector in open source?

Roy gave the link for it here (http://forums.developer.mindtouch.com/showpost.php?p=22923&postcount=1)
