Site settings could not be loaded

Site settings could not be loadedWe were unable to locate the API to request site settings. Please see below for debugging information.
HTTP Response Status Code: 401

I get this error when trying to view the site. I have looked for a while and all the people that had this problem either had a different status code or fixed it on their own and didn't post how they fixed it.

I am stumped.

This happened the day after our administrator loaded an iis patch for 6

Any help would be great.

Status code 401 means "Unauthorized (http://www.checkupdown.com/status/E401.html)" so you might want to use "Troubleshooting HTTP 401 errors in IIS (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/907273)".
