MindTouch Core is going to stick around for a while since it's subset of MindTouch Platform, which keeps being supported. Also, MindTouch Core is open source, which means the community and you have a lot of control over its future. Odds are MindTouch Core will outlive MindTouch Platform simply because the latter is a commercial product with a finite lifespan for customer support. I'm hoping MindTouch Core will continue serve you well for years to come!

Yes, contributions from the community for Core are great, however I don't see that many contributions happening. Maybe I'm looking into the wrong spot. I just don't see an as vibrate community when compared to other wiki platforms. For examples, activity on the forums seems rather sparse. Anyways, I'm still on the fence should whether or not I should take the plunge into mindtouch?

I unofficially maintained the code for the tree nav for a while, but there are some reasons I can see for lack of more community contribution.

Technical: having to understand both C# and PHP raises the bar, and C# is still somewhat marginal in the open-source world.

Managerial: the source and issue tracking repositories have shuffled around a bit, but now that they're moderately clearly advertised I think they can be useful conduits to get things in, though contributions are not always merged since it's a semi-open project, and projects run by companies tend to be less agile. If you want to look for community involvement in the project, the bug tracker is probably the place to go.

Marketing: this is one of the prime issues, I think. I assume the other projects you're talking about are pure open-source, and open-source developers are far more likely to contribute to a completely open project than a semi-open one, and Mindtouch/Dekiwiki has always been marketed as a hybrid product. If the projects were maintained entirely separately, with commercial plugins and support, and the open project emphasized as such, with some courtship of community involvement, things might have turned out differently.

As things have progressed, I think anyone who was hesitant to contribute to the project earlier over concerns of governance would be vindicated by the gradual creep of commercial advertising, decline of feature-additions, etc in the open codebase.

In fact, now that Core has been completely abolished from the MindTouch website, you'd be hard-pressed to know there was an open-source component. In fact, it's gotten so bad that I can't even find a download link for a recent version of Core to update existing installations, and I couldn't even recommend it to someone for a new installation if I wanted to, since they'd have no way of downloading it.

Companies must make money, understood, but I think the open side of the project was pretty largely mishandled - it feels like the early adopters who helped improve the project are now deemed to have out-lived their usefulness.

Holy shit!!! I did not realise that! Is there maybe another website for the opensource edition ? i missed something? Now, with all my wikis (more than 10), i'm really worried about the futur of the opensource version.

You see, I try to be involved in the community, but i can feel that it's not so easy to contribute. For example, i can not edit a page on the documentation "http://developer.mindtouch.com/", and i don't have any idea of who can do that, and what is the process to gain an access.

By the way, Steeve, i absolutely don't agree with the "shrinking market" of companies that don't use a cloud. Maybe in you country, but i don't feel so in Europe. More and more, i see people that do not trust other companies to keep their data.

By the way, is this website "http://help.mindtouch.us/" a wrapper for "http://developer.mindtouch.com/" ? If not, which one is updated ?

MindTouch Core/Platform will be getting another release shortly that brings various improvements from TCS over. As as there is demand for it, we'll continue to invest in maintaining its code for the future.

As for documentation, http://developer.mindtouch.com is for MindTouch Core/Platform and http://help.mindtouch.us is for MindTouch TCS. We should probably make that clearer on their respective homepages. Thanks for bringing it up!

We're a small educational entity/non-profit using Mindtouch Core. Is there any offering, or plans of offering, an non-profit/educational Mindtouch TCS license at a reduced cost? We use core because we have the in-house know-how to support it, and because a full TCS license would be too expensive (or so I assume, the Mindtrouch website doesn't even give pricing information). With feature development for Core winding down, we'd be happy to move over, even it we had to pay more than "free", but we'd need something that was affordable to a educational non-profit with a regular need to turnover a lot of student users (i.e. per user pricing would not fit us well).

    Any thoughts?
