Not an install or Upgrade, but lost contact wtih MySQL DB

I know next to nothing about how installing MindTouch, and I have been running our installation as a housekeeper for several years. This morning, our application (ChemWiki.ucdavis.edu) lost contact with the MySQL database with the below information.

Anyone kind enough to direct me towards a work solution that does not make me cry?

Site settings could not be loaded

We were unable to locate the API to request site settings. Please see below for debugging information. If this is a new install, try refreshing - the API is simply taking its time loading up!

HTTP Response Status Code: 500
