Angry Install on a hosting company's server possible??
Hi
I'm new to Hayes, but read up tonnes and see the benefits...

Our company is hosting our domain at lunarpages.com... offers windows and linux hosting. We are most interested in setting up on their linux server, running CENTOS Enterprise 4.5 i686 which is similar to Fedora...
But can we do this ? If we need to to edit system files and run scripts etc. since they generally give you a web-control panel, not commandline access!... If it IS POSSIBLE, is there anywhere we can find detailed info on the HOW TO?????

Thanks a mil!
Dave

Hi Dave, This has been discussed before, I suspect because of the requirements of .net/mono its not possible at this time to have dekiwiki on a hosted platform, unless they provide .net/mono.

Are you on shared hosting or VPS/dedicated? dekihost needs to run on a separate port than the web server, so I don't think that'll happen on a shared hosting plan. Also, it needs .NET or Mono framework as well, so the Lunarpages linux server would need to have that installed as well.

Thank you for your quick replies! We're on a shared host... are there plans to make this possible... it would greatly increase the amount of users... ? what would the cost be ?

Sorry - given that .NET/mono is installed, how much of deki wiki would need to change to make it a possibility ?

Looks like the Lunarpages VPS (virtual private server) package starts at $40/month. If mono is not preinstalled, you would be responsible for installing it yourself. That's not a problem, as you get root and shell access to your VPS.

I personally have no experience with VPS hosting, so hopefully someone else would have some recommendations of specific hosting providers that would be good for hosting a Deki Wiki.

We're working towards a version of Deki Wiki that will only require the PHP files, while the API is run on our servers. This way, you won't need to install mono/.net, but you'll get all its benefits. ETA is towards end of the year.

Check out this page on VPS hosting: http://wiki.opengarden.org/Deki_Wiki...ki_Wiki_on_VPS This will enable you to setup your own wiki and be able to install components via root access like mono.

Actually, http://wik.is is free. However, it still runs Gooseberry++ which was released almost a year ago. Keeping my fingers crossed, we should be converting wik.is to Hayes+ by early November.

Converting almost 50,000 sites is no small feat!
